How to Use RoomPlanz

Getting started with RoomPlanz is simple and straightforward. Follow these steps to create your perfect room layout:

  1. Define Your Room Dimensions: Enter the width and length of your room in millimeters. RoomPlanz supports rooms from 500mm to 50,000mm per side, accommodating everything from small closets to large open-plan spaces. Your room boundary will appear on the canvas immediately.
  2. Add Furniture and Objects: Use the Create panel on the left to add rectangles, squares, or circles representing your furniture pieces. Each object can be customized with exact dimensions to match your real furniture measurements.
  3. Position and Arrange: Click and drag objects to move them around your room. Use the corner handles to resize items, and the rotation handle to adjust angles. All changes update in real-time, and objects are automatically constrained within your room boundaries.
  4. Fine-Tune with Properties: Select any object to access the Properties panel on the right. Here you can enter precise measurements, set exact positions, adjust rotation angles, change colors for visual organization, and add labels to identify each piece.
  5. Use Grid and Snap Features: Enable the grid overlay to help visualize spacing and alignment. Turn on snap-to-grid to automatically align objects to grid intersections, making it easy to create perfectly aligned layouts. Choose from grid spacings of 100mm, 250mm, 500mm, or 1000mm.
  6. Zoom and Pan: Use scroll or pinch gestures to zoom in for detailed placement or zoom out for an overview. Drag the background to pan around larger rooms. The zoom and pan features help you work comfortably with rooms of any size.
  7. Save Your Work: Export your layout as JSON to save it for later. You can import the JSON file anytime to continue working. Also export high-quality JPEG images of your layout to share with contractors, designers, or family members.

Why Planning Your Room Layout Matters

Taking time to plan your room layout before moving furniture or making purchases offers numerous practical benefits that save you time, money, and physical effort:

Maximize Space Efficiency

Every room has a finite amount of space, and poor planning can make even large rooms feel cramped. By mapping out your layout in advance, you can identify the most efficient furniture arrangements, ensure adequate walkways, and make the most of every square meter. This is especially crucial in smaller apartments or homes where space is at a premium.

Optimize Traffic Flow

A well-planned room considers how people will move through the space. Proper layout planning ensures clear pathways between doorways, prevents bottlenecks, and creates natural movement patterns. This is particularly important in high-traffic areas like living rooms, kitchens, and hallways where multiple people may need to navigate simultaneously.

Avoid Costly Furniture Mistakes

Nothing is more frustrating than purchasing a beautiful piece of furniture only to discover it doesn't fit in your space or blocks essential features like outlets, vents, or windows. Planning your layout with exact measurements prevents these expensive mistakes and ensures everything fits before you buy.

Visualize Before Committing

Digital planning lets you experiment with multiple layout options without lifting a single piece of furniture. Try different arrangements, compare options side-by-side, and refine your design until it's perfect. This visualization helps you make confident decisions about your space.

Professional Results

Whether you're working with an interior designer, contractor, or furniture retailer, having a detailed layout plan demonstrates professionalism and clear vision. It facilitates better communication with service providers and ensures everyone is working from the same blueprint.

Common Room Layout Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced decorators can fall into these common layout pitfalls. Use RoomPlanz to identify and prevent these issues before they become problems:

  • Furniture Blocking Natural Pathways: Placing furniture in front of doorways or creating zigzag paths between rooms disrupts flow and makes spaces feel awkward. Maintain clear, direct pathways with at least 80-90cm width for comfortable passage.
  • Ignoring Room Proportions: Oversized furniture in small rooms makes spaces feel claustrophobic, while tiny pieces in large rooms create a disconnected, empty feeling. Scale your furniture appropriately to match your room dimensions.
  • Pushing All Furniture Against Walls: While this might seem like it creates more floor space, it often makes rooms feel sterile and uninviting. Floating furniture pieces away from walls can actually make spaces feel more intimate and purposeful.
  • Forgetting About Doors and Windows: A layout that looks perfect on paper can fail if it prevents doors from opening fully, blocks window access, or covers heating vents. Always account for the swing radius of doors and accessibility to windows and climate control features.
  • Neglecting Electrical Outlets and Lighting: Placing your TV or desk far from electrical outlets leads to unsightly cable runs or expensive rewiring. Plan furniture positions with outlet locations in mind, and ensure lighting reaches all functional areas.
  • Creating Dead Zones: Awkward corners or spaces that become unusable due to poor planning represent wasted square footage. Identify these potential dead zones early and plan furniture or storage solutions to activate every part of your room.
  • Insufficient Clearance: Forgetting to leave space around furniture for drawers to open, chairs to pull out, or people to walk behind seating creates daily frustration. Always add 60-90cm clearance around functional furniture pieces.
  • Not Considering Room Function: A beautiful layout that doesn't support how you actually use the space is ultimately unsuccessful. Think about daily activities, traffic patterns during different times of day, and the room's primary purpose when planning.
